Major construction on one turn before West Fork. There's a traffic light system in place that keeps if from getting backed up.
Meant to head over to Casner Cabin Draw area again but forgot to turn... Headed up to Kachina and the parking lot was full of school buses so I turned back. Drove down a bit and just jumped the rail. The aspen are incredible. Even with leaves they're blinding white due to the large trunks. They must be on miracle grow or some sequoia breed! Believe the groves on each side are separate. One side was prime autumn color and other side hadn't begun to turn.
About five minutes in I see a couple meditating in the distance. Then notice there's an old jeep road. So much for off-trail, I followed the road down and it goes to that popular pull out. Just before though, turned right and boom I'm on the Arizona Trail...lol A sign mentioned it's not finished. I followed it for what had to be the nicest half mile section of the AZT then turned back to go investigate the road. It heads down through a meadow and soon passes a water tank.
Not sure how far up from the road you're allowed to travel. I have several maps and went with the shortest modern road for data. On the old maps it goes to the upper ski area, though I'm sure you hit some sort of fence stating off limits at some point. As is the case in the upper end, although I wouldn't know, right!, cause that's off limits anyhow.
Maybe I'll check out the upper end next year, I've had my fill on Kachina Wilderness for this year with a record five visits for myself. |
