After setting up camp for the second time today we set off SE across Pendleton Mesa toward Horse Tank Creek hoping to reach Devils Playground Tank.
Crossing Pendleton Mesa was easy enough but the descent down the 'left' side of the drainage into Horse Tank Creek was fraught with hazards including plenty of cat's-claw. After numerous back-tracks out of thickets we eventually crossed the drainage to clearer terrain. The only problem with that is it got much steeper... we should have kept going down the other side.
Oh well, enough of this, and we turned back and ascended back up to the mesa along the cliffs above Horse Tank Creek. As we passed Pendleton Tank on the return trip we decided to take another trip back in the early evening with hopes of maybe catching some wildlife drinking at the tank. (We'd already seen a huge white-tailed deer earlier in the day across the mesa.) |
