Yesterday during our ascent of Peak 6202 we got a great look at pretty much all of Pendleton Mesa, which prompted the idea for a hike encompassing as much of the perimeter as possible.
We began by heading North from our campsite to the area near where we spotted a large white-tail buck yesterday. No joy, so we began a long and somewhat winding counter-clockwise loop, with the first mile or so roughly parallel and above upper Cherry Creek.
As much time as we were hiking, with little drama to speak of I'll leave it to the photos to tell the story. Speaking of which, I had a LOT of thinning to do before posting the photoset, after all over 120 photos could become tedious.
Ok, so we had just a little drama... late in the hike as we were headed back toward Pendleton Tank what would come rushing over the hill toward us but three elk bulls with large racks. One was quite large and two were absolutely HUGE!
But of course the moment they saw us they turned and shot back over the hill before either of us could take a photo.
Thinking they may have stopped in a grove of trees near Pendleton Tank, we split up and each of us took an arc so we would approach from opposite directions. No such luck... they were long gone.
While we would see no more elk all weekend, overnight we would hear elk bugling for hours, some approaching within 200' of our camp. (We would see the evidence in the morning) |
