| partners | | With so many canyons in the vicinity, what better thing to do for a hike than to follow the perimeters of a bunch at a time. After some quick scanning of area maps we found a spot along NP 633 which would be the perfect place to start, taking in five canyons in one general direction then three more from a short distance away in another direction.
So we drove the few miles from our camp, found a place to park just off the road and set out. After the first loop of five canyons we returned to the Jeep for a quick break. But when I started it up, the security key light stayed on and the engine would die within 5 seconds.
Oh great... the rain-caused electrical gremlins we experienced back at Capitol Reef had reared their ugly head again. So here we are, no cell service and probably a minimum of a $1,000 tow away from help, so if we're getting anywhere I'll have to figure it out myself.
So... Since I knew the problem originated somewhere in the dash, yet not knowing exactly where, I set about disassembling it to access ALL the electrical connectors. After about an hour I had located less than half of the connectors, but one in particular, C-201, had 74 connections so that looked like a good place to check. I wasn't able to separate it completely, but just enough to loosen and tighten it, along with the other connectors I located, then crossed my fingers and tried to start the Jeep.
YES!
It started and stayed running and the security light was off. So no more hiking today, let's head back to camp and figure out if we trust it to stay three more days as planned, or head home early. The decision would wait til morning. |
