But instead of driving on NP 633 the 25 miles back to The Cove, we set up camp less than 5 miles from UT 95 next to Rock Creek. So as soon as we set up camp we set out for an exploration of Rock Creek Canyon.
Although at a glance it appeared a couple short descents right from our camp would get us to the canyon floor, but upon closer inspection, no way. So we continued 'upstream' in search of a route to the canyon floor. Eventually we came to a point where we could drop down, but it was barely 10 feet to a wide wash next to a deep pour-off. Still not able to descend to the floor, we crossed the wash and began to follow the winding path of the creek, albeit having to stay at least one or two steps/terraces above the bottom for most of the way.
We got close to the bottom a few times, and could probably have slid down the last ten feet, but with no way to get back up we weren't about to chance it. Looking across the canyon we found one quite promising spot, but of course it was on the OTHER side of the canyon. Maybe we'll check it out over the next few days. (Due to unforeseen circumstances, we never did)
When we hit the main wash/canyon of Rock Creek it was too deep to cross so we hung a left and began following it upstream, again in hopes of finding a way to the bottom. But being the main part of the creek, the canyon walls and pour-offs were even taller so we continued 'upstream' until we reached the road then cut a path cross-country to a corral before heading back to camp, with plenty of ideas for the next few days. |
