Took two FLatiron rookies out for their first Flatiron attempt. Sarah and Dori. I've hiked with both girls and have watched them both run out hard finishes on a few hikes, so I knew they were strong. But this is Flatiron. Both girls were feeling the pain on the long gradual increasing pitch up to the basin.

We had started at 4pm,hoping to enjoy some nice color with the sun setting behind us. The mountain lit up in tones of golds and reds. It took us over an hour to reach the basin, so I knew we probably wouldn't be making summit unless we made it a late night. We decided to turn around wherever we were at the 2 hour mark. At 6:30pm we came across Michael and Mohammad who were on their way down. They had started their day at 1pm. They had planned no food for their trip. They had two flashlights, one not working, the other intermittently working. And their phones were down to 5% power from taking pictures. Not good. I just happened to have two extra headlamps to loan. They did have water. Well, one of them did. We shared our dinner with them and then I loaned Michael a pair of gloves after he stuck his hand in a cactus.

Nice guys, ill-prepared, but they were in great spirits and we enjoyed their company on the way down. We parted ways at Jacob's Crosscut where they peeled off and headed for their car. I offered to have them follow us to Mining Camp and I would drive them to their car, but they refused and insisted they would be okay. By this time, the full moon popped up over the mountain and you could actually see the trail quite well without added light.

Fun sunset/night trip. Sarah's concern about the night portion was negated by the good headlamp light and our only real problem along the way was with the mosquitoes. We finished up at 8pm having made it about 2/3's the way up to the Flatiron summit. Now both girls are hungry for another shot at the summit.
