Broad and imposing from the front or back, it appears thin from the sides. The spire for which it is named juts out much higher than the other hoodoos. From the Peralta TH, take the Peralta trail to Fremont Saddle, then hike up to the top of the ridge just west of the saddle following the Super Dacite loop in a CCW direction. When the trail starts to bend to the SSW, leave the trail and head towards the cluster of hoodoos to the NW. From here until you get to the spire, it's a fair amount of bushwhacking and some scrambling.
The warm and comfy bed ruled the morning; I didn't get started until just before 9 and it was still chilly outside. The route I drew up and tested on Google Earth was a good one, until I cliffed out . I ended up backtracking and circling around to the east to avoid the cliffs. That worked. Once at the Wicked Wall Spire, I walked around to see the different views. Later, I hiked over to an overlook above Old West Boulder Canyon to have lunch. I thought there might be some nice views there. The rocky perch that I decided on had great views, but there was a cliff on my right flank that I wasn't comfy sitting next to. I went back to the wall and had lunch there instead. Just as I sat down, the sun pierced a slit on top of the spire. Perfect time for a photo.
The route I took back worked much better. I found a chute that I was able to scramble up that took me back to my original track much quicker. This saved some time (and bushwhacking). The direct route back was about 3.25 miles. A little bloodied from the bushwhacking and somewhat beat up from the effort, it was nonetheless a fun hike on a gorgeous day. |
