| no partners | | When I got to the TH a little before 8:30, I had to add a third layer due to cool temps and brisk winds. About a mile into the hike, though, it was just about perfect. Once in Haunted Canyon, the sycamores were golden in the morning light and the trails were inviting. Tony's Ranch is a rare glimpse of the old west, well worth the trip.
The plan was an out and back hike, but after stopping for lunch at the campground north of the cabin, I decided to head up the hill to finish the Haunted Canyon trail, then loop back on FR 287. I misread Fritski's hike description, though, thinking the TH was only a couple of miles down the road. It's more like 4. It became monotonous after about a mile. Fritski rode a mountain bike back. I recommend that as a shuttle option. It's almost all downhill and the road is in good shape all the way back to the TH.
There were about a dozen backpackers at the campground with another 8-10 backpackers that arrived at the TH just as I was starting my hike. There was no water in the creek until about the five mile mark, then a few small pools of murky water. The trough at Tony's spring was full and clear with a steady flow.
Aside from the last four miles down the forest road, I enjoyed this hike quite a bit. There is lots to do out here and I plan to be back. This is my second trip to the eastern Superstitions this month. I enjoyed both hikes, but I wanted to stay longer each time and felt short changed when I didn't. I guess I need to dust off my camping gear.
Great day in the Supes! |
