This would better be categorized as "Storm Chased."

Returning from a quick trip to Silver City, New Mexico Sunday I was hoping to make it home before the advertised storm action. I should have known better, but it made for some real excitement! :D I drove through a line of strong storms west of Benson, but then broke into the clear. It looked like it would be fairly uneventful the rest of the way, but storm development was rapid. As I neared my neighborhood, it was bombs away! :o

I arrived home at 3:14 PM and the rain started at 3:01 (according to my weather station data). But by then nearly an inch of rain had fallen and water was flowing everywhere in the immediate area of the rain bomb. Things began to let up by around 3:30 and my backyard was pretty flooded, but more water was coming into the yard from the alley and points west, which are higher. I had to go out and do some trenching to get it to flow off my patio and out toward the street. Haven't had to do that in a number of years, but this was an intense short duration rainfall on already saturated ground, so not surprising. There was a lot of close cloud to ground lightning going on to make it even wilder! (This monsoon is almost a throwback to the good old days of the early 1980's so far! :) )

After the storm I check the actual rain gauge measurements against the electronic readouts to make sure there wasn't anything spurious going on. That is always possibility and is the reason you need backup readings (ground truth); especially so with lots of lightning action. Things agreed well, so the data is considered good. Breakdown is as follows:

Total precip for day 2.00, total for month now at 6.07 and year to date 7.56! The 6.07 inches so far in July ranks as my second wettest (since 1980)...wettest being 7.38 inches in 1990 (there have been a number of others with 5 inches plus)! Still have plenty of time to break the record. :)

To illustrate how intense the rain was yesterday, 1.91 of the daily total fell in one hour (3-4 PM). Additionally, most in 5 minutes was .51, 10 minutes .81, and 30 minutes 1.09. It truly was bombs away. :y:

Water reports? Yup, saw plenty.

My tired old RAV4 received many free car washes on this trip! :D
