| no partners | | Before heading home to stormy Arizona, I decided to drive the scenic loop known as the "Trail of the Mountain Spirits" (less the portion to the Gila Cliff Dwellings). I used to do this drive more often back in the late 80's and 90's; not so much in recent times. This drive utilizes NM 15, 35, 152, and a portion of US 180. Starts and ends in Silver City, with the area around Lake Roberts being the most scenic in my opinion.
There are two forest service campgrounds at Lake Roberts: Mesa and Upper End, and they were both filled when I drove through (popular with fishermen of course). I really like Mesa, since it is on a bluff above the lake with great views. On the way to San Lorenzo along the Mimbres Valley, I stopped at another recreation spot I had wondered about for years, but never seen. This is Bear Canyon Reservoir near the small community of Mimbres, and it is administered by New Mexico Game and Fish. It is just off the highway with easy access. Glad I finally stopped to see it. From there it was back to Silver and then home. |
