William on A82 toward Inverness at the 1st roundabout take glen nevis road that follows the nevis waterway. Nice drive up the glen past the glen nevis visitor centre ,where hikes up Ben Nevis start, past the location of filming for Braveheart in Glen Nevis, though no trace remains except a car park by that name, with free range sheep along the shoulder of the road. Parking area could contain 30 cars so suggest an early start to get one though there are lower car parks to use which would add distance. The hike starts at the edge of the parking area with warnings of deaths along the path due to falls! You enter woodlands for a short distance.Afterwards the path is rocky and alongside the roaring gorge with nice views of flowing water. Once the top of the gorge is reached a wide open meadow gives views of the waterfall. As you approach the waterfall if you desire to go to the base you will need to decide whether to walk across the river, shallow at this time, or take the obvious path to the right to access the wire bridge to the other side, views are nice enough without being under the waterfall. Rising above the waterfall is An Gearanach and other Munro's, back at the carpark there is a waterslide coming off Ben Nevis. There have been deaths on this hike but it never seemed dangerous I wonder perhaps boulder hopping in the gorge when the water flow is heavier, would be best however to have hiking boots or shoes with good traction. Of course being in Scotland it began to rain when I reached the river crossing for the falls fortunately I had all my rain gear with me. This hike is crowded but with nice scenery and the right amount of time if you leave your wife in Ft.William to shop to prevent serious financial damage. |
