My dad and uncle decided to brave the wind and go anyways to scout for me and enjoy the cool fall air. 40-50 mph winds made for very cool fall air. I decided to head up a few days later for an all or nothing one evening trip. I had a great spot that was confirmed to have lots of elk. The weather that afternoon was perfect with only mild to moderate wind. I was set up early in the meadow at about 2:30 PM. Multiple bulls were screaming across the hillside within the trees. Everything was playing out perfectly. The elk were finally working their way towards the meadow. That's when it all fell apart. Right when things were starting to happen, two hikers came through the meadow just beyond the tree line at 5:00 PM. I couldn't believe my eyes. They had every right to be there but it was beyond frustrating. One group of elk was literally coming right towards my spot before they showed up. Everything was put on hold. The elk stayed in the trees until about 6:00 PM. Finally a large herd with a lead bull paraded out into the meadow to feed. It was actually still going to work. Not as good as it could have been, but at least something was still going to happen. Regretfully, I spoke too soon.. Take a wild guess who's now wrapping up their evening hike. I just knew that was going to happen. The herd immediately ran back up into the trees. The party was officially over. I just about fell over and died. I barely squeezed off a couple photos before they all ran off.
The consolation prize was a lone curious (and dumb) young spike that came out into the meadow right at sunset. Not exactly what I had in mind but he was all I had. He was actually a fun elk. He walked right towards where I was set up. He never saw me but he was suspicious. Once I started packing up he knew something was wrong. Ha.. He trotted back and forth while barking at me. It's more of a loud yelp. He was all upset but he still never completely ran off. Funny.. A talked to him for a while and finally walked back to the car. Oh well, it happens. It's demoralizing but it happens. I had fun and made the best of it. It was a good trip overall. I'm already excited for next year!
