| no partners | | I advertised this trip to my friends as a "3 Hour Tour." Yeah just like Gilligan's Island. So, knowing me, they knew there was no chance we would be back in 3 hours. Ended up being closer to 5 hours, but there was a lot to see. Elk were out everywhere including a group of 14 bulls dressed in velvet antlers. We also came across one whitetail dear and 3 antelope that were bedding down in the shade of some Ponderosa pines not far off the side of the road.
Along the way, we drove through a mixture of burnt areas and others that were untouched by the Wallow Fire. In many of the burnt areas, the aspen are coming back with a vengeance. Thick stands of aspen are popping up everywhere. It has been 7 years since the fire. Much of the aspen we saw are in the range of 8-15 feet tall.
We circled around Big Lake and headed south towards the Black River. We parked near a bridge and hiked in about 1/4 mile to a nice pool that was deep enough to take a dip and jump off the rocks. A fisherman's trail zigzags back and forth across the river which was running low for this time of year.
We finished up our trip with a drive back up along the East Fork Black River and into the Williams Valley area, before getting on the highway back to our place in Auger Canyon. |
