| no partners | | Decided to take my daughter hiking for my birthday and she was anxious to try "the other" route to the top of Camelback since she had summited via Echo Canyon at the age of 4. We still tried the Echo Canyon lot but, as it was already 6:45AM when we arrived, the line of cars was already too long and we set off for Cholla.
She made an impressive attempt despite some slips and scrapes but ended up deciding she had enough just before trail marker #22 (I forget how many there are total on Cholla.) She spotted a roadrunner right around that marker and we took a little break to watch him hop around the rocks before we headed back to the TH.
In all honesty, i think she would have made it was it not for my stern pre-hike warning of "there are no bathrooms on the mountain or anywhere near where we will park so-- if you need to pee, you will have to hold it." That may have been my downfall as i think she was carrying that in the back of her mind the entire hike.
Either way-- great hike with my favorite partner on my birthday-- cannot complain about that.
PS-- I was extremely pleased that not a single hiker passed me blasting obnoxious music at top volume. I know they put up those signs on Echo Canyon but I still see people on there using their headphones as defacto speakers by hanging them around their neck and cranking em all the way up-- maybe it is not an issue on Cholla... or maybe things are getting better |
