Our goal was a game tank a couple of miles from the Margies Cove road and to check out granite outcroppings for Native encampments. In a ravine I came upon aircraft debris, but a thorough search didn't turn up more. A little while later we came upon what my wife called a perfect place to camp and a short telephone pole. Then we noticed three more poles separated by about 50 yards and each had a metal hook top and bottom. Right away I settled on poles to hold target banners for fighter planes. Later we came upon 3 poles twice the length of the first 4 and they also had metal hooks top and bottom. I searched all over front and behind for shell casings .50 Cal. to be exact and found nothing. When I returned my wife was waiting for me in the shade of an ancient ironwood tree. It was this tree that was in direct line of fire that made me realize these were not targets. So more searching the web and I found manuals for field antennas. We returned Sunday armed with knowledge and the camera I forgot in the spring. We found one more piece of debris and another group of short poles. So one more piece of military history was added to our wanderings of the Maricopas. |
