| no partners | | My backpack is very heavy with water. The downside of loosing weight is my hipbelt is maxed out snug, so I use a fleece shirt wrapped around me to pad it more. The road is closed past the sign, and it shows very little signs of use in a long time. My favorite kind of walk, with no traffic. I am not far from the border, but this area shows pretty much no sign of illegals.
The land is open and stark, again a favorite. I walk and soon leave the road, as it is boring. I walk closer to the granite bouldered mountains, and take note of weird stuff, partial rockets in the sand, what looks like more than a hundred feet of det cord, intricate cairns. I find some mine remains with pretty rock. I don't stay long, from what I had read the copper ore is integrated with some uranium ore, the background radiation here is notable.
I walk on, another gap in the mountains. Here I find subtle remains of a mining camp, and up a neighboring canyon an old blind, a tank and some intriguing rock. I leave my pack at the blind and start up the canyon. Some bouldering required but really fun and pleasant. I hope to find some pools but all is dry.
On my way out I run across a developed tank, a little water there. A large pot shard not too far away, so it was known here to look for water.
I leave the scenic rockbound bowl and traverse along the base of the range. I find a suitable camp, I am cowboy camping so just need to be out of the wind. I read, sleep and have a nice shelter under a jutting boulder, I can see the sky but the wind does not reach me.
The next morning I read, coffee and up and out. A little more walking and another mine tunnel, well used by sheep. I soon cross country back to the vehicle. No one appears to have been by, foot or vehicle. I drive out, my hips sore but my spirit good. It is always good to be out, especially in the great desolate desert. |
