Near the ghost town of Ruby, Montana peak is a pretty easy walk up depending on how you approach. Chiminea has a little more spice to it. Ruby peak presides over the old town and I decided on it for today.
I wanted to take off from the Ruby road but a border patrol truck was parked at my chosen spot and no one in the vehicle. That made me hesitate, so I located another little road. My route was going to be longer but oh well.
To avoid cliff climbing I had a lot of up and down out of washes and over ridge lines till on the ridge line approach that avoided the cliff faces. Lots of pretty crystalline rock along the way. Summit register showed last sign in in 2015, and nothing after 2007 till then. No summit disc that I could find. On the way back I took an easier route because I wanted to check out an area of reddish rock. Shin dagger and catclaw central in that area.
Surprised to find some water yet in some of the washes from the last little rain we had. Back at the car explored an apparent old mining area off a faint road spur. I have never seen so much old broken glass, there was some metal and odd rock from smelting. Lots of little cup like discs which I ascertained were crucibles probably used in assaying. Site showed some evidence of digging for old mine stuff. Perhaps a dump site from Ruby?? Quite interesting.
Nice day and pleasant temps for the off trail. |
