| no partners | | On a solo camping trip to explore the Bull Canyon area of the Sierra Ancha. Set up my car camp at the Nordhoff-Hope trailhead and took off on this loop hike to do some exploring. Found the recently renovated Shack Tank full of water. The remains of an old mining camp were near the Shack Tank - perhaps the origin of its name. The camp probably dates back to the early 1950s when uranium was mined here. The only part of the camp still standing was a 2-holer outhouse. It looked usable but probably not too comfortable because someone stole the toilet seats. The old road which leads down to this area from FR203A traverses the side of the canyon for about 0.3 miles leading to several abandoned but open mine shafts all part of the Sue Mine complex. Some great views of Bull Canyon from this mining road.
Returning to camp along the old mining road I encountered a mine claim with the paperwork stuffed in a bottle inverted over the top of a wood post. It was dated 2005 indicating prospecting is still going on up here long after active mining stopped in the mid-1950s. |
