Another successful campout with the Grasshopper. I drove into camp on the first day, Wed. Mar 20 at mid afternoon after taking my time to enjoy the views on the way down the long steep 4x4 road to the camp location at the Clay Spring corrals. Hank was in the middle of setting up his camp against the east side of the corral fence. The camp site has a great view of the Sierra Ancha mountains through a v-shaped slot to the north as well as the white ledges, a slab of white rock (granite?) tilted at 60 deg, which extends east to west for many miles passing within a 100 yards of our camp. Although there were many open spaces to park there was a shortage of level spots where a tent could be set up. I sleep in the back of my Toyota FJ so got it level with rocks under the downhill tires and I was set for the week.

RWStorm would join us Thurs afternoon for a 2 night stay which stretched to 3 nights partly due to the generosity of Hank's camp kitchen. Randal S. joined us Friday afternoon and stayed for two nights. Trekkin Gecko and Outdoor Lover joined us Sunday for a day hike down Hess Canyon. Hank and I stayed through the following Monday. We did several hikes originating out of our camp and drove to two other locations. There was much to explore in this area but there are no developed trails, just a few 4x4 roads and cow trails. Hank and I had some pre-planned gps tracks traced out on Google Earth and on Garmin mapsource which helped us find our way. Hank had also done some exploratory planning hikes back in Feb and RedRoxx44 was a valuable source of info on the area. It was a fantastic 6 days with perfect weather, meeting new HAZ friends, and hiking in awesome scenery. Thank you, Hank, for setting this up and making it a success with your usual detailed planning.
