Started from Needle Vista parking lot (AZ-88 construction starts right before it) and headed down the sidewalk, then took track under the powerlines down to a wash. We bumbled along the wash, playing with rocks and sticks along the way, eventually hitting shiny new signs for a 'Hackberry Springs Trail'. This trail looks like it was just spun up this year, fresh dirt and brush clearing along the way. We only followed it for a half mile before taking a planned detour to the south, down to our usual approach wash, and then circled up to Hackberry Spring. Then we took the new trail up, which was steep but over quickly, and finished off the lasso.
Spring was in good shape, campsites look great, the 1 year-old toddled around for a little bit during our break, and the 5 year-old found a snake on trail and released a high-pitched scream that could probably be heard in Apache Junction. This was a long one for the boys to hike and the last mile was a struggle, yet they pulled through in good spirits. I rather liked this approach to Hackberry Spring and will probably be out with them again on this soon... pending temps, anyways. |
