My brother wanted to try out the GPS and picked the Spur Cross/Tortuga route and we followed the route as described in the HIKE description. I did this hike a couple years ago in late spring and remembered it fairly well. We took our time as I usually do, stopping a bit too frequently, as my brothers remind me, to take photos.
First of all, the creek is running high and swift so it took a little more care to cross it... which you do about 6 times (if you come back via Metate and you should right now as it's incredibly beautiful with the green grass underneath the trees and such). Fortunately, I was with my brothers so they were able to track out a path for me to cross the creek.
Second, it is very plush right now; especially the under growth. Once you leave the gate on the Tortuga trail after the second Elephant Mtn intersection the trail turns into a bit of a cow trail but there are cairns quite frequently as it is easy to stray; especially when the rock trail spreads out. However, we only strayed once and were also able to see the hoof prints of the horseback riders horses who had travelled before us.
We had lunch at the white bedrock area slightly after Page Spring. It was a wonderful day for a hike and a lunch. We do wonder why they call the mtn you hike below Sugar Loaf Mtn, so my brother dubbed it Subway Mtn, but since the sandwiches were a bit dry; I think we should call it M&Ms Mtn instead, ha! We only saw 3 other hikers on the back side of the trail between the mountains.

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
