| no partners | | What an adventure this easy hike turned into...I brot my cousin and a friend and her husband and son for the Metate round trip hike. And in spite of my telling the husband how difficult the trail was if you did the Tortuga, it went in one ear and out the other.
He and his son decided to plow ahead while we girls were engrossed in our picture taking (the prickly pear and buckhorn and ocotillo cactus were blooming their full heads off). Instead of turning around at the corrals where the Spur Cross trail splits into two different trails, they proceeded up Cave Creek Trail 4 - but they didn't tell us. I figured they couldn't have gone past the corrals so we figured they went back to the car; as the husband had told me earlier, he would just go back when he got tired (he is overweight and has a bad knee among other things).
Much to our chagrin, when we got back to the parking lot, there wasn't any sign of them so we decided to call their cell only to discover that they were 4 or 5 miles out and it was 6pm. My cell phone wasn't working well so we decided to go up to Spur Cross Stables to get some assistance. Well to make a long story short, Search and Rescue had to be called and got them off the trail around 7:30.
So many lessons learned and as usual, we girls did the right thing at the right time by not delaying the call to 911. We had the husband call so that they could pin point them. And for the helicpoter to see them easier, he held his lit cell phone up. It was also good the husband hiked up to an area where he thot the helicpoter could land. But two rights don't make up for that very poor judgment on his part; especially with his 9 yr old son along.
Other than that the hike was awesome! |

For me, sometimes it's just as much about the journey as the destination.
Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled. |
