| no partners | | After making the decision to not camp at Rustler Park, it was down the mountain to Sunny Flat. As expected pretty warm when I arrived, but some weak thundershowers were about to move through, which ended up giving a little relief for awhile. But the remainder of the evening was warm, humid, somewhat buggy, with the added excitement of skunks moving through camp on occasion. That is pretty common for the Portal area, so you have to be a little heads up for tails up.
This trip I was trying out sleeping on a cot instead of my usual air mattress routine. Worked out pretty well.
I was surprised to see how dry it was there, especially since it is one of the favored areas for monsoon storms. Just goes to show you how spotty the rains have been this summer (so far). The remainder of the night was quiet and warm. I was hoping that Tuesday would see some cloud development by late morning to help cope with the above normal temperatures, but no clouds were seen until about 1 PM, and little bitty ones at that! That did it, my plan for spending a second night was done, as the hoped for thundershowers were not going to happen. I broke down camp, loaded the truck as the temperature was pushing past 90 degrees , and headed home.
