There are numerous campgrounds in the vicinity, and this one is both convenient to town and tent friendly. There are 10 single, 2 double, and 3 triple units. Fees in 2018 were: $16 single, $25 double, and $32 triple (of course half that for seniors). Because it is high elevation, the campground is open only from **May 11 to September 4**. I have stayed there twice now, and like it.
** or something like that
While I was there during prime summer thunderstorm season, it rained 4 or 5 times, with a total of about an inch recorded during my stay, the most being during the first night. At one time the campground road was open all the way down Apache Canyon past camp to US 82 east of Cloudcroft, but now has been gated and a separate picnic area established further down canyon accessed from US 82.
The friendly campground host told me I should walk further down the gated road and check out what he said was an abandoned scout camp. I did that and it didn't really look abandoned to me, just not being kept up. When I got home I did some research and found that the recent decrease in use was due to some power plays and shenanigans at the Yucca Council of El Paso, Texas, which oversees scouting activity in this area. It involves another place in New Mexico I like: Kingston: desertexposure.com/200812/200812_kingston.php
Anyway, I think this has settled down and the camp is still in use as best I can determine.
It was perfect using this as a base camp for three days while I did other things in the vicinity. |
