It had been nearly a year since my last visit and I wanted to check out the changes. For years this tough old city on the Santa Fe Trail had been sort of forgotten. But in recent years, in large part through the efforts of the Chamber of Commerce, Kathy Hendrickson, and Allan Affeldt, a sort of Renaissance has been taking place. This was fairly predictable due to the sheer volume of historic architecture and the dramatic natural setting...it was only a matter of time. The film industry has long had a presence here, but now tourism is being promoted quite heavily. It is about a mile between the railroad district and the historic old town plaza section, so everything in the core is within walking distance. The Skillet and Borracho's are gathering places adding energy to this sort of rebirth.
I booked two nights at the Plaza Hotel, with the middle day focus being the Hermit Peak hike. The restaurant in the hotel is under new management and the lobby has changed some as well. And of course the restoration of the Castaneda Hotel in the railroad district continues at a pretty fast pace. It made me happy to see the new life in this cool old town! 
Another thing taking place during my visit was a film crew doing some shooting for a possible remake of the "Roswell" TV series. This was one of my favorite shows from the 1999-2002 time period. It is based on the "Roswell High" book series by Melinda Metz, and had quite the cult following back then. (I like to refer to it as teenage alien angst.  ) Anyway, since it is a remake following the same story line, I will likely have a hard time liking it with different actors. The original cast was dynamite.
On my way home I swung by Lamy to check out the status of the Legal Tender Saloon that is now another restoration project of Allan Affeldt. As I was driving in to park and get some photos, I saw there were quite a few vehicles at the Legal Tender, and I spotted Allan snapping some cell phone shots. I rolled down the window and said, "Mr. Affeldt, it looks to me like you are having fun these days!" He smiled and replied, " Yes indeed, I am having lots of fun."  |
