This is just a bit of musing about two recent short road trips over to Silver City, New Mexico. Easy three hour drive from Tucson, and once you get off the freeway, things get better immediately. I have always enjoyed stopping in or passing through this fine small town. There is so much to see and do in the entire area. Located at an elevation of about 6000 feet, it is a good place to escape intense summer heat. A fine time to visit is in late March through early April, when the numerous flowering trees and shrubs that have been planted over the years are in bloom. I stopped at the Silver City Museum for the first time in many years. They have a nice little gift shop where I purchased a book and the DVD "Salt of the Earth." For these trips I decided to stay at some of the older, less expensive motels that are across the street from each other: the Copper Manor and the Drifter. I had not stayed at Copper Manor before. The Big Red Barn Steakhouse that was adjacent is now gone, and a spanking new Denny's is in its place. I ate there on the first trip, but the staff was a bit disorganized (because it is new I guess). Next trip I stayed at the Drifter, and enjoyed breakfast at the attached restaurant (included with your lodging). It is a classic greasy spoon diner...just great! This place has been a Silver City mainstay for many years. There used to be a cocktail lounge located under the restaurant, but has been closed for awhile now. I stayed at the Drifter one other time, back in June 1990 on a trip with Mom. That one was memorable because the Gila Hotshots fire fighting crew was staying there, and in the evening the young buff dudes were hanging out on the upper balcony shirtless, while a steady parade of local girls cruised through the parking lot checking them out. Mom got a kick out of that show!

When I purchased my RAV4 new in November 2000, Silver City was its first road trip. On my way back to Arizona that time, I stopped at the state line along the Mule Creek Road (Highway 78) to take a picture of it (December 1, 2000 with 400* miles on the odometer). I stopped at the same spot on my most recent trip to re-create the photo (April 10, 2018 with 220,100* miles on the odometer). :)
