| no partners | | fourth trip to utah with my good friend sue from nebraska
this time we decided to focus on the grand staircase-escalante area
today was a total audible
we stopped at the big water ranger station and learned cottonwood canyon road was closed due to recent rains
we didn't want to drive all the way around, and the ranger suggested going up johnson canyon and skutumpah roads
this was a great alternative - johnson canyon road is paved and skutumpah road is dirt, but easily negotiated by high clearance, two wheel drive when dry
very scenic
the ranger also suggested hiking lick wash, which wasn't previously on my radar
got going around 2:00
dropped almost immediately into a slot, which continued for about 3/4 mile before opening up
the official hike goes to park wash, which wasn't as obvious in person as it looks on the topo
so we went a bit further before turning back
a little rocky in places, not much elevation change
good choice right on the way to cannonville
stayed at the grand staircase inn
drove over to tropic to meet @azbeaver for dinner, as she was in bryce for the weekend with some of her girl friends

everything worked out, as it usually does for us
