| no partners | | weather had cleared so sue and i packed up and headed out in chilly temps and a good breeze
strike one: [ The Pine Creek Box Trail ]
wanted to do the whole thing, but need a shuttle for it so we planned to do the lower section out and back
drove out posey lake road about five miles - not bad after yesterday's rain
started the hike, made it over the first creek crossing and found there would be no way to stay dry at the second
there are 54 creek crossings on this trail with deeper flow than usual so we turned around
this would be a great hike and it's staying on the list
next up: 100 hands
had steph's description and a map from wade
set out from the escalante river trailhead
sue found the social trail after i started the hard way
fun climb up near the cliffs and then a scavenger hunt for the petroglyphs
temps had warmed up and we just wandered around for awhile
could see a little storm cell coming our way, and on the drive out it started raining lightly again
stopped at kiva koffee until it passed - fun place
strike two: [ Devil's Garden ]
twelve miles down hole-in-the-rock road
we did okay for half of it, then a big stretch of mud that i couldn't see the end of
one 30 degree slide was enough so we turned around
escalante petrified forest state park:
this was a pleasant surprise
did both the petrified forest trail and trail of sleeping rainbows
short but a very nice hike with some elevation gain, good views and interesting samples of petrified wood
campground and a lake - wouldn't mind staying here
mossy cave:
we were staying at the grand staircase inn in cannonville again, planning on IDK BBQ for dinner
did this little hike right off the road
not all that interesting except for the hoodoos along the wash
maybe better if cave was dripping more and waterfall was running
locals were saying the cool temps were a bit early
the rain affected access to several things on my list
have to expect a glitch or two occasionally
still a nice day, and plenty to do when i come back this way
