| no partners | | I went to check out the ruins on this "Local Mountain" after seeing the Jan 22, 2019 post by Hansenaz. It made for a nice hike except for the cholla which were thick on the hillside leading up to the upper ruin. I had only ventured about 30 ft into the thicket before getting both boots covered with the stickery fuzz balls and one embedded in my knee just above my kevlar gators. There were pottery sherds scattered everywhere. I started seeing them a half mile before getting to the ruin.
The lower ruin was larger and the collapsed walls were not as visible in the thickets of Creosote Bush compared to the upper ruin. The upper ruin appeared to have some recent partial re-stacking of the walls. Some of the rooms at both sites were unusually large which makes one wonder where they got roofing timbers long and large enough to reach wall to wall. Perhaps the area was more forested back in those days. The number of rooms indicates there was a fairly large number of people living here, maybe 50+. Getting water for that many people to this site from the spring located about a half mile away must have been quite a chore.
I made a loop hike out of the adventure and explored down the bottom of a canyon where I promptly got marooned between two pour offs in a short section of slot canyon. Made the mistake of dropping down a short pour off knowing I wouldn't be able to climb back up, then found an impassable 20 ft pour off a short distance further down canyon. It would have been really embarrassing if I had to use my Spot emergency locator to get out of that mess. So I gutted up and crawled up the cliff side. |
