| partners | | My upstairs neighbor, the snowbird from Michigan, was back after the holidays and ready to go on a hike so I chose this easy loop hike. It's a short drive from where we live and I've always liked the abundance of granite boulders carved by time into interesting shapes. There was construction on facilities well under way at the trail head with the metal framing for a couple of structures in place. A trail steward told us it would be similar to the Brown Ranch trailhead facilities with restrooms but no water. I mentioned that the restrooms would be most welcome and the trail steward's husband said "Well, there's plenty of places to go along the trail" as he pointed to all the bushes and Palo Verde Trees. This was shortly after his wife had admonished me for going a few feet off-trail to take some photos. She quickly stated that going off-trail for such bodily functions was OK until the restrooms were completed. Good to know. Gotta love those over-zealous volunteer trail stewards.
The trails are well groomed and a favorite of many mountain bikers, especially the older set who aren't into the more technical mountain bike trails. We weren't in a hurry so decided to add a side trek to the Balanced Rock. A swarm of mountain bikers and a group of about 10 hikers were swarming the granite outcropping around this popular feature. They soon dispersed and we enjoyed a quiet lunch in the lee of the Balanced Rock (there was a strong wind blowing by then). It was an enjoyable relaxing hike with great views of the Mazatzals to the east.
