As usual in the SA the hike involved some challenging route finding around and over rock outcroppings and brush but our efforts were rewarded with getting a close up look at the remains of a large Indian compound. It was one of many in the past few years that were located by SSK44 using Google Earth and ranks up there with some of his best finds. The compound had an exterior defensive wall surrounding an area measuring approximately 240 ft long by 100 ft wide. The walls were partially crumbled down but had short sections that were 5 ft tall. There appeared to have been large courtroom areas at each end of the compound with many rooms in the center. We could not get a good count of the number of rooms because of the brush and tall grass hiding the walls. No pottery sherds were seen but neither of us have sharp eyes for locating them. We did see a broken metate with a mano sitting in its grinding recess.
We managed to get back to GH's 4-Runner and make the long rough drive back to Camp GH #15 before the sun went down. The temperature dropped rapidly as soon as the sun ducked behind the nearest peak and the water in GH's dishwashing bucket was frozen solid by morning. Just the beginning of another memorable trip to the SA.
