The JF trail on the way up to Tortilla Pass is in decent condition with a little overgrowth near the top. On the other side the hike starts out fine but once you drop down into the drainage the trail was a tangled mess. The weight of the recent snow bent most of the bushes/trees down and across the trail. Several branches have broken off and i must have moved a few dozen branches off to the side on the trail. Once down in Angel Basin I decided to hike over to Angel Spring area. The off trail was equally interesting with most bushes and trees still bent over. I stooped for a snack break at the trough and sat next to Mrs Gladys Bacon. After the break I went to the ruin and still there was no one around. I think the hike down Rogers Canyon would have been fun with the water flow. I first though about completing the loop up Rogers Canyon but decided against swimming upstream. On the hike back up the JF trail I ran into Nathan and Emily. I didn't think I'd see anyone else out there so when I saw him I just shouted it out. "Hey you're Nathan Brisk" He didn't run so maybe it wasn't too bad. After talking a few minutes we continued on our way. It was warmer on the hike up the JF trail but cooled down at Tortilla Pass were the breeze kicked up. I saw another backpacker hiking down from the pass who was heading back toward the lake. I noticed many poppies on the west facing slopes of Rogers Ridge an the way down. As I approached the trailhead I passed on more hiker just starting out. The drive out was a little busier and I was slowed down by a chain of ATVs for a mile before they pulled off on a side road. A nice day in the Supes with water running and great weather. |
