Denny & I had considered hiking up to Malapais Mountain today. I knew the temperature would be good and the photos would be great so we decided to give it a shot. We waited an extra hour for the sun to come out but the hike up started in the low clouds. The trail is good and the traction better when wet except for the ice patches which we avoided. The views were spectacular but the snow got deeper as we climbed. The ridge on Geronimo Head was 8 to 12 inches so it slowed us down. We got cold feet (literally) and decided to just hike Geronimo Head and save Malapais for another day. We hit the peak, took lots of photos and hiked out. Tortilla flat was crowded as was SR88 and we were glad to get out of there. We stopped at Sonic for a burger and shake. Thanks for the hike Denny.
