| no partners | | We backpacked in to Harnish Camp (near Marsh Valley) to explore some myths and legends of the Superstitions. The forecast was good for Wednesday & Thursday but called for rain late Thursday and early Friday. Apparently the forecast changed and while there were clouds no rain ever came. On Wednesday we hiked in and set up camp and then explored Ruth Valley to look for a marker. Next it was up the side of Bluff Spring Mountain to look for one of the Magill mines. Wednesday night was damp as dew covered the tents as soon as the sun went down. Thursday morning was nice and we hiked up Bluff Spring Canyon to look for the Peck Mine. After stopping at the Peck mine we scrambled up on Bluff Spring Mountain and enjoyed the views. There was a lot of water in Hidden Valley and it is scenic. We crossed over to the northwest side and found the old Magill Camp. There has been recent activity at the old site and there are several sleeping bags and over a dozen pans and supplies up there. After scrambling back down to the Dutchman trail we looked for an old agave roasting pit and found several artifacts and a trail camera nearby. Thursday evening was much dryer and there was no dew on the tents all night. Friday morning we packed up and hiked out. We saw a dead gray fox just west of the Dutchman trail about a half mile north of the junction with the Terrapin trail so the rabies problem may not be over. The cloud cover keep it cool and we passed several backpackers (and hikers) coming in. When we arrived at the Peralta Trailhead the lot was almost full. There is water in most of the creeks and the weather was great. |
