| no partners | | The directions to the Derrick Trail TH are excellent. I found the sign marking the Derrick Trail and began. Yeah it is rocky, but this is Arizona. I didn't find it any rockier than most trails that I hike. It did remind me of some of the best hiking advice that I ever received - from back when I was a youngster: " Aadooh Ni Cha'ah a Ch'i'i' ! ! ! ! " " Yiih Naalth ! "
This section of the Highline Trail is very nice. Quite a bit of treefall that needs to be cleaned up on this stretch of the Highline.
Lots of Lupine and some other wildflowers still in bloom. Not knowing what to expect on this trail, I did not go up to Promontory Point. Now I wish that I had. The trail - not including the climb to Promontory Point - is not that difficult and the vista from Promontory Point should be worth the effort. I'll be back and will definitely get to Promontory Point next time.
Got to Horton Creek. Lots of Yellow Columbine in bloom. Went up to Horton Springs. Met two dads backpacking with their kids and Lab - Titan. Followed them down the Creek a ways, but they were sticking close to the creek. I climbed out to the trail and came in on the trail. Lots of people hiking Horton Creek today and lots of people camping along Tonto Creek. Very popular and rightly so. It is beautiful. Lots of wildflowers still in bloom along the Horton Creek part of the Trail. I'm glad I did this loop - especially in this direction - instead of just an out & back on Horton Creek. This is Hike #46 in "100 Classic hikes in Arizona (Second edition)" by Scott Warren.
Most of this loop - Highline Trail and Horton Creek - rate 4 stars. Derrick Trail rates 3 stars. Horton Springs rates 5 stars. So an overall rating of 4.3 rounded to 4. |
