| no partners | | While Big Boy was stopped at Willcox, I headed over to Bowie to wait for it. There was a good turnout in Bowie, and from what I had seen so far today, this special train is drawing lots of fans eager to see Big Boy 4014, no matter where it is. Can't blame them!  I picked another great place to see it, and there even was a freight train rolling through to add to the experience.
It took me a little while to get back on the interstate, and the train wasn't fooling around! I didn't catch up to it until east of San Simon, where it was slowing down as it started the climb towards Steins Pass, New Mexico. Since Steins is a historic old ghost town in a picturesque spot, I figured there would be lots of folks there too...yup. I didn't have much time to find a spot for photographs, and before you know it Big Boy popped into view and poured it on as it started downhill again. I couldn't get any video as it all happened so fast. 
Playing catch up again racing east across the playa, I realized I am seeing a lot of the same vehicles. There is a pack of folks following the train, and when I got near it on the interstate, this group was slowing down to about its speed and causing some mild traffic tension. I don't like traveling in a pack, so I was a bit uneasy until I worked through it, especially knowing that the majority of drivers there were not interested in the train and just wanted to keep their speed up. I was able to get to the west end of Lordsburg and park for one last look at the train before heading back home. Didn't have to wait long, and it was nice to see the train slowing down, as it coasted along the slight downhill toward the center of town, where it would spend the night.

Yes, it turned out to be quite an interesting day, as I became one of the "desperadoes waiting for a train."  |
