Plenty of time to meet some people, check out the now open Castaneda Hotel, and hit some of my favorite watering holes in this interesting old city on the Santa Fe Trail. I decided to see something different this trip, so headed over to this wildlife refuge a short distance southeast of town. I first stopped at the visitor center for an overview. Then I continued on the 8 mile scenic auto drive through the preserve, with stops at scenic spots. I also did a 2 mile hike on the Gallinas Nature Trail from the parking lot/trailhead, located at the southwest corner of the loop drive.

Very scenic area, with the preserve out on the edge of the Great Plains, and fine views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west, including Hermit Peak. Storms boiling up over the mountains just enhanced my visit!
