An August 10th post there mentioned the flood and a rescue along with a short video clip of the water raging over the dam. Several days later the Coronado NF issued a travel and closure order due to this situation. (in the Files section of that Facebook page is a very detailed PDF file about the history of Rucker Lake and adjacent watershed, which is a good read)
When I was in there on July 17th, everything was calm and somewhat idyllic. I mentioned in my triplog that I planned to go back later this summer to camp there for old times sake. Ha! That wasn't going to happen after this. I was finally able to get down there to see the aftermath on September 5th, and though the closure was ongoing, I figured I would drive in to the closure point and walk the road back to the last campground. Reading the closure notice more carefully, it stated that all entry was prohibited, and with work crews active, I wasn't interested in getting in trouble. So, I didn't get to see much, but I did see enough to verify this was a big event.
Note: the Coronado NF reopened the area on October 24th, with the exception of Cypress Campground, which will remained closed indefinitely. |
