Two barbed wire fences to cross to get into the creek that runs between the north and south ridges. First has a spot to slide through, but the second had to be hopped. The top and bottom line aren't barbed, so it's easy to crawl under or work over. Took the creek up to the northern ridge, a good mix of rock hopping and slick rock areas with pools of green, scummy water.
Northern ridge ascends quickly and levels out. Saw two white tail deer on the way up. Rocky with lots of cacti and brush. Once the ridge turns south toward the summit there's a little scrambling involved as the climb continues and the ridge skinnies-up.
Modest views on top. Smoggy except east to the Mazatzals and north to who-knows-what.
South ridge down is grassy with loose rock ensuring no good footing for the ~two miles. A test of patience and ankle stability. Practically stepped on a gopher snake hiding out between exposed rock and adjoining grass, but it just slithered into its hole. Not one for the summer.
Saw no one on the hike. Nice, short bushwhack that's close to Phoenix, but it's probably best in wildflower season when its deal gets sweetened. |
