Took the harem out to the west valley to check out some trails in the Estrella Foothills also known to some as the Pirate Trails. Top of the list was double black diamond (on the mountain bike scale) Blackjack and brand new Round Up. We started at Estrella Foothills Park, which has a baseball field, bike pump track, a field for the RC airplane club, and most importantly, restrooms. Headed east out of the park on not very obvious trails and then north on a jeep road. East again on the unmarked "Jumpline" (which is obvious from the multitude of earthen bicycle jumps) trail which meanders its way north by northeast to Blackjack. Blackjack makes for a great hiking trail that quickly climbs to the top of the Foothills ridgeline. Technically, this is a downhill mountain bike trail. I'd love to watch someone go down this on a bike as there are some big drops and bigger rocks to crash on. Great 360 degree views from the ridgeline. Blackjack ends at the saddle of trail Upside Down, which we followed for a short distance to the northwest until jumping off on new trail Round Up. Round Up is a pleasant trail that eases its way all the way back down to Estrella Parkway for about 3 miles. Turned west on Estrella (there is a sidewalk) for a short distance then south on unmarked Saddle Up trail. Saddle Up climbs back up into the foothills and does have some cryptic signage at intersections. Stop by the bike shop at Casa Lucero to pick up a free map of the foothills trail system. Once up to the saddle, we took Giddy Up down to Pirate's Cove to complete our loop back to the park. Cool 39 degree start to the hike and ultra comfortable 60 degree end.
