| no partners | | Due to the Steeler holiday in Arizona last weekend, I missed hiking. For this weekend, the Steeler game got flexed to the night game, so that gave me an opportunity to take the family out for a morning hike. I hadn't started a hike from the Willow Canyon Trailhead, so I decided to take a ride out there and check that out.
I'm not really sure which trail we were on, or even which track I downloaded. We headed in on the main road, then crossed the wash and too another road northwest-bound to a single track. The single track then headed up a saddle and over to the other trails we had done before. There were a couple junctions for other trails before this, but I decided to stay on the track I downloaded.
I wanted to keep the hike to just over 5 miles, so at the 2.5 mark, it was either head back or try to figure out a loop option. There was a lasso loop to the west, but it seemed like it might be longer than the kids were in the mood more. I noticed that the trail we were on crossed a wash that looked like it headed over to the dirt road that goes back to the trailhead. That was was very wide and easy to walk, so it ended up being mostly and easier hike than the trail we took in.
Eventually, the wash narrowed and there were some deep pools that we would have had to get wet to cross. I saw that there was another wash further back that looked like it also headed to the road. We walked to that and it narrowed into a slot canyon before it dead ended at a dry waterfall. It was possible to crawl up the one step, but it seemed like it might a little hard for the family. We decided to head up a steep hillside and found ourselves getting farther away from the road. We eventually got back down to the wash again after the waterfall and back on the road.
Once back on the jeep road, it was an easy again back to the trailhead. We saw a few four wheelers on their way in and out and waited as they went by. Having seen no other hikers, this was the only hike I've seen more vehicle drivers than hikers on a hike.
This hike puts me over 500 miles for the year, a first for me, at least that I've kept track of. Nice to get that much in for a year. It will be nice to see if I can continue to get more miles next year than I did for the previous year. |
