| no partners | | I was gonna take advantage of what looked to be shaping out to be a 25-year flood on area gauges and hit a sweet canyon I really like. I figured nobody would be anywhere nearby today, so I was shocked to pass AZGFD about two miles into the drive. Good thing I had my STL permit all current!
Speaking of current, I didn't remember the road taking the same track as a wash, but it does, and I didn't remember it being rough, but the water washed the packed roadbed away and I got tired of putting my skid plates to good use on the bare rock that remained. Plus it started raining again, and besides driving upstream in a flooded creek, I still had another sketchy creek crossing behind me on my mind. So much for the assumption that water would be going down today ...
With plan A out of the question, I was ready to head for another option. But first there was a thing that caught my eye on the map the night before and it was nearby, so I decided to see if it was anything interesting.
Winner winner chicken dinner! I heard it first, and then saw the 150-foot waterfall in topography I didn't think was even possible for there to be that much of a drop, nevermind all at once. From here, I mapped out a way to get down to the bottom, and it was even more magical than I could have ever imagined. The water flow made it incredible. This can't run more than once or twice a year, and at this volume, likely much longer.
I'd like to say I'll be back ... but when? There's no way to plan these conditions. Today was pure luck. |
