| no partners | | We had planned on making this a loop hike but three factors changed it to an out and back... heat, humidity, and people. We parked in a residential area north of New River Road and hiked over to Cave Creek and proceeded south off trail on some extraordinary beautiful bedrock following the creek. This led us to a large lake that we had found last year. It's part of the creek but the bedrock shelf is so large it has allowed this lake of sorts to exist along with a nice riparian area and bosque. Even during high CFM flow the "lake" is always very placid due to it's size.
We found remnants of a gold mining operation on both sides of the creek here. Gold settles on bedrock so that kind of made sense. After taking in the sights we did an about face and headed north up the creek to the mouth of Go John Canyon and then followed the northern bank of Go John Wash as we turned westerly. It was getting really warm and humid and we were now leaving State Trust Land. That means we were headed straight towards the Cave Creek Recreation Area and the throngs of new hikers that seem to be populating the trails.
So we decided to abort the 6.5 mile loop we had planned and just retraced our route back to the car. A happy and safe April to everyone. |
