| no partners | | Went out not only for some exercise but to also scope out the extent of the damage caused by the "East Desert" fire near our home. We started at 5am from the P.A. Seitts Trailhead and after crossing the creek (still flowing!) we entered the Cave Creek Regional Park through permit only State Trust Land.
We decided that a CCW loop using the Military, Flat Rock, Quartz, Go John, and Slate trails would give us some good vantage points of the burn. Good news to report...the entire southern 2/3 of the park is untouched by the fire. As we approached the northern section of Go John loop we could smell the fire. The footprint of the 50% contained fire shown on the incident report shows the northern section of the Go John Trail was taken by the fire. [ photo ] By the time we were getting close enough for some photos a helicopter did several passes over our heads. I'm not super-smart, but I can take a hint. We backtracked back down to the Quartz trail to take to the Slate and then completed the loop.
I sure hope no long lasting damage was done to the northern section of the park and the Go John Trail. That section of the Go John is my favorite even with the encroachment of development from the north. I'll have to wait until the fire crews have left to get in closer to really see the extent of the burn. Stay tuned! |
