| no partners | | It has been many decades since Mrs. SloFolks and I have been up on the rim. We remedied that this morning with a loop and re-exploration of the Wood's Canyon Lake area plus a short jaunt on the Rim Vista Trail. Back when we were dating and also early in our marriage we used to bring our Mastiff/Shepard mix "Payson" up to Woods Canyon Lake for him to unwind and play in the water. This area was so little used back in the late 70's and early 80's that there was no problem letting him off his leash. That would certainly not be doable now!
We were the second car in the lot at 7:40 and the the car that was already there was packed with five large guys waiting to buy beer when the store opened at eight o'clock. We had planned to do the loop around the lake twice...once in each direction as posted last week by @Daytripper. We ventured off the Blue Diamond trail a LOT as there was so much to see. It was great to smell the pines again at 7600'. After our first "lap" the parking lot was over flowing and it was a mass of humanity lining the lake to fish and also hitting the trails. We decided to cut and run and drove out to the rim road and after a cheese stick and a ZipFizz we hiked along the rim trail doing an 'out and back' to the car.
With only slightly over 600 feet of AEG the 7600' of elevation had my funky lungs feeling like we did 1600'. Cathy was getting a slight headache so we decided to head down to where the oxygen was. We drove towards Payson to grab some breakfast and I was looking for the Creekside Inn and Restaurant @ Christopher Creek just to see if it was still there. The divided highway that wasn't there last time completely took it out of view and it is no longer a visible roadside business. I used to play guitar there with a friend on some weekends but that was back in the day when my hair was brown and my teeth were white. I was kind of a big deal We ate instead at the 260 Cafe and had our first "sit down" restaurant meal since the Covid problem started. The food was good and the pancakes were very different...I'll explain in the photo caption. |
