If there was enough room the hike title would be AZT #27, Fred Haught Trail, Box Canyon, Box Ridge, FR 393, FR 300, General Crook Trail.

The one-and-only time I hiked the Fred Haught Trail previously was on a very warm July day in 2010... so it was no wonder nothing seemed familiar. The only thing I remember well was missing a turn near the end, which wouldn't be a problem today because we would turn into Box Canyon well before that point.

The trek along the AZT had plenty of shade and a nice tread making for a nice peaceful, leisurely pace. On the trail before Box Canyon we met one couple and a solo hiker. All were pleasant enough... and we all kept our distance while passing.

The plan was to loop back south the length of Box Canyon but as usual I tend to wander when not following an actual trail. In this case we headed up the ridge just west of box Canyon. Along the ridge we came upon an old road, which although the FS map doesn't show it out this far, it would probably be considered an extension of FR 393. In this area we noticed a number of orange painted trees as well as many more marked with blue paint. The orange trees appeared to be marking the outer perimeter of the sections marked in blue so we wondered whether the blue were meant for removal or? If didn't make much sense for it to be thinning as there were areas nearby which were choked with trees. Anyone know what the blue and orange markings are for, I'd be interested to know.
(If it weren't after office closing right now, I would have called the FS and asked them... too late)

We hit the Rim Road (FR 300) for a very short distance before the last short jaunt along the General Crook Trail and back to the car.

We had a thought of hitting the tunnel trail just before heading back to the car but my right foot was not feeling well enough for even a short steep down-and-up so... another time. And that would be the end of this three day/two night car camping trip.
