Barely 15 minutes into the hike I managed to take two steps next to a rattlesnake before I saw the rattle and realized what it was. Apparently it was napping in the sun because it made no noise and did not move, or even stick out its tongue until I walked around a bush to approach it from head-on again, except I would be filming it this time. Only when I came within about three feet did it wake-up and sound off.

Rattlesnake episode complete, I set off eastward in hopes of encountering either javelina or deer, both of which I would see fresh tracks of at some point during the hike. Unfortunately, I encountered neither.
I was a bit surprised about an hour into the hike that the humidity must have dropped significantly as my wicking gear was drying out faster than I could wet it by sweating... so I kept squirting water on them and with a nice breeze it felt great. SO MUCH better conditions than two days ago.
Like my previous hike in this area I crossed to the west side of Usery Pass Road and did a bit more exploring where I had never set foot ever before. Found a few remnants of a couple old campsites but nothing worthy of a photo. |
