Peak was obscured in clouds and rain and camp was a swamp. When I woke back up it had cleared substantially and we decided to go for it. He drove to camp and my wife drove his forerunner with the kids back to their house. The plan was for them to do the cave hike in CB south with the kids to see the elusive fairy slipper, but the kids revolted and they ended up walking the neighborhood.
We decided to do the peak from the trail out of my campsite which basically got us half way to the tree line before bushwhacking the rest of the way to the top. This hike was basically an excercise in determination as there really was no trail and it was steep and the scree made me wonder if any of the mountain wasn’t a pile of sliding rock. Once we got just below the ridge it was scrambling on more solid rock. It was a good hike and the views were spectacular. The steepness of the final half mile below the tree line and the scree field made this hike seem longer than it was. It was one of the more challenging short hikes I’ve done in a while. Brent’s wife Heather pointed out that it was 4 years ago to the day that he and I skinned up and Skied Little Italy on Pikes Peak. We decided that we all should get together a little more often. |
