| no partners | | We did several short hikes throughout the day checking out as much as we could of Gettysburg. In the morning we started at the Visitor Center (which was closed) and did a 2.5 lasso loop across Cemetery Ridge and down past the PA Memorial. After that we drove down to the south end. I wanted to hike to the top of Big Round Top, but we mistakenly got to the top of Bushman's Hill. that was about a mile and a half. Once we were done with that, in the car I found a tick on me  . Luckily it didn't latch on. On the way back, we did the driving tour past the Wheatfield and the Peach Orchard.
After lunch and an afternoon nap, we headed to the north side of the city to check out Oak Ridge, the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, Barlow Knoll, and McPhearson Ridge. This was all the site of the first day of the battle, and the Union troops retreated southward through the city and up towards Cemetery Ridge, where they got the high ground that ultimately led to the their victory.
After getting back to the hotel, we still had some daylight, so we walked down to the Soldier's National Cemetery and back, which was at least 3 miles round trip, giving us probably 7 for the day. The SNC was very interesting, and is where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address to a large crowd who could barely hear him.
I was here once before in grade school, so I was learning things about this for the first time. It's very interesting to imaging the battles taking place in the fields there, but it does take quite alot of studying to know all the things that happened over the 3 day battle. We were there on July 1, which was the 157th anniversary of the first day of the battle. The crowds weren't too bad, probably due to the pandemic still happening. We left the next day, thankfully missing what seemed to be a large group of right wingers who thought an antifa demonstration was going to occur. We saw that on the news the next day, right after we were there.  |
