Once I got to the east end of the loop, I saw a trail that continued eastward. I decided to follow that trail and several other that branched off, and looped around. They were all mostly flat, and that seemed like a better idea. It seems like they have more trails planned for this area but haven't made them official yet.
Once I got to the 5 mile mark, I hiked most of those trails and was back at the east end of the Westwing loop, having to hike up the steep section. I was also drenched in sweat thanks to some serious humidity that was kicking. I hiked to the main peak on Westwing, and then took the easiest way back to the parking lot. Only got 7 miles, but it was rough hiking in the humidity with the elevation gain. It also seemed like even the flat trails were really rocky, making it slow going.
Saw a coyote early on at the easternmost point of my hike, but he was gone too fast for me to get a picture. Cloud cover made it not too hot early, but then they cleared and it got hotter, but not as bad as it's been recently. At the northernmost point of the one unofficial trail, I saw a trail continuing north, seemed like it was paralleling New River. I hiked a few feet of it to make a spur on my track and kept closer to Westwing. I might check it out later on another visit. |
